There are three key ways consumers navigate a food app:

  • looking at venues featured on the home page

  • filtering by food type

  • searching for a specific restaurant.

Due to the nature of how new venues have been listed on platforms and the complexity of creating that listing, food types are often not consistent across venues (especially in the larger chains). This means that you may be missing out on meal occasions and sales opportunities in specific locations.

Subway is listed under “American” and “Sandwiches” on all of its 1019 locations but only listed under “Salads” and “Wraps” for 58 locations. As such in many locations Subway will not be found under the “Wrap” food type.

Pizza Express is listed under “Italian” and “Pizza” on all of its 268 locations. Three locations are missing the “Dessert” category while two locations are missing the “Pasta” category.

Ensure that you are covering every food type that your restaurant offers and that this is consistent across all platforms and across every one of your locations.

How to Run the Report

1) Select the Grid Builder analysis and type in the name of your estate. e.g. Frankie & Benny's.

2) Click on Filters, select the Grid Builder tab and choose the Food Types field.

3) You can sort the Food Types in each column by clicking on the header. This is sorted based on the number of tags a venue has which makes it easy to highlight any venues potentially missing tags.

In this example these two Frankie & Benny's locations are missing the food tags American and one is missing Vegan and has Alcohol instead.

If there are specific food tags which you wish to check across your estate click on Filters, scroll down to Food Type, toggle the does not include option and choose the tag from the list. We would advise selecting one platform at a time.

This will highlight any locations missing specific food tags.

In the below example we have selected Frankie and Benny venues which does not include the Food Type Burgers

This example shows venues which don't include the Food Type American.

Alternatively you can export the Grid Builder report showing food tags from all platforms and use the filter option in Excel to find any missing tags.

We would recommending contacting the platforms or amending in their systems to ensure all relevant food tags are shown. Then re-run this report the next day to ensure the issue is corrected.
